Long hallway runners, made to the length of your hall

Shop runners come in set lengths, so in a long hall they often stop short. We cut each runner to the exact length and width of your hall or landing, from your own carpet or new carpet, and finish the edge with tape or whipping. One piece of carpet can make more than one runner. We're based in Melksham, working with customers across the UK.

Why a long hallway runner is hard to buy

Ready-made runners are sold in standard sizes, usually from 2m to 4m long. If your hall is longer than that, or an awkward length in between, you end up with a runner that stops well short of the end, or one that's too long and bunches against a door.

A made to measure runner gets round that. We cut it to the length of your hall and to the width that leaves the right amount of floor showing either side, so it sits properly in the space. The only limit on length is the carpet: the piece has to be big enough for the runner you want.

How to measure a hall for a runner

You don't need perfect figures to get a quote, but this helps.

  1. Measure the length of the hall from one end to the other. If it opens into a room, measure to just before the doorway.
  2. Measure the width at the narrowest point. Door frames and radiators often make a hall narrower in places.
  3. Take off a strip of floor for each side. The usual advice is a border of at least 10 to 15cm each side, so the runner sits in the middle.
  4. Open and close every door onto the hall and check none of them will catch on the runner.

Not sure you've got it right? Send us photos of the hall with the measurements you have, and Eleanor will talk it through with you before anything is cut.

Tape or whipping for a hallway

Both finishes seal the cut edge. The choice is about the look you want down the length of the hall.

Tape edging

A cotton or herringbone tape is stitched all the way round, which frames the runner like a border. In a long hall that border is the line your eye follows from the front door to the far end. We keep hundreds of tapes, so you can go for a bold contrast or a quiet neutral close to the carpet.

Whipping

Yarn is wrapped tightly over the edge, matched to the carpet or in a contrast colour. We whip runners in British wool. The edge blends in rather than framing the runner, so it's the one to choose if you want the carpet to be the star. One customer in Bristol wrote: "A hallway runner whipped by Wiltshire Rugs has transformed our entrance!"

Still deciding? We'll send tape samples so you can see them against your carpet at home. There's more on both finishes on our carpet binding and whipping page.

Runners on landings

Measure a landing the same way as a hall. Landings often have several doors opening onto them, so check each one swings clear.

If you'd like a runner in the hall and another on the landing, we can cut both from one piece of carpet, as long as it's big enough, so they match. We also make stair runners in tape or whipping if you want the stairs to go with them. If your landing is L shaped or an odd layout, send photos so Eleanor can see what's possible.

Made from your carpet or new carpet

Carpet left over from a recent fitting is ideal for a runner, as long as the piece is long enough. You don't have to buy carpet from us: bring carpet from anywhere, or we can help you choose something new if you're starting from scratch. We finish all types of carpet.

Ordering a runner from anywhere in the UK

Every runner is cut and finished by hand in our workshop in Melksham. Customers in Bath, Trowbridge, Westbury, Chippenham and West Wiltshire can drop their carpet at the workshop. If you're further away, call Eleanor and she'll talk you through getting your carpet to us and back.

We don't publish a price list, because every runner is made to measure. Send a photo of your hall or your carpet with rough measurements and we'll come back with options and a price.

Ring 07921 671108 or use the contact form and choose "Hallway runner". You can see runners we've finished in the gallery.

Common questions

Anything else, just ask. Eleanor is happy to talk through your options before you commit to anything.

How long can a hallway runner be?

We cut runners to the exact length of your hall. The limit is the piece of carpet, so send us your measurements and Eleanor will tell you what's possible.

Can you make a runner from my own carpet?

Yes. Offcuts from a recent fitting are ideal, as long as the piece is big enough for the runner you want.

Can you make more than one runner from one piece of carpet?

Yes. We can cut several runners from one piece, for example one for the hall and one for the landing, so they match.

Can I see the tape colours before I choose?

Yes. We have hundreds of tapes, and we'll send samples so you can see them against your carpet at home.

Do you only make runners for people near Melksham?

No. We're based in Melksham, working with customers across the UK. Call Eleanor on 07921 671108 and she'll talk you through getting your carpet to us and back.
