Turn your own carpet into a rug

Yes, a piece of your own carpet can be made into a rug. We cut it to the size and shape you want and finish the edge by hand, with tape or whipping, in our workshop in Melksham. Offcuts from a new fitting are ideal, and so is an old carpet you can't bear to throw away. Based in Melksham, working with customers across the UK.

What to do with carpet offcuts

New carpet is expensive, and a fitting often leaves a good piece over. Rather than let it go in the skip, we can turn leftover carpet into rugs, hallway runners and doormats, and because it's the same carpet as the room, the new piece matches the rest of your home.

One offcut can go further than you'd think. We can cut several runners from one piece of carpet, or a set of matching mats with one for every door.

Any size or shape, made to measure

Every rug we make is made to measure, from your carpet. Give us the size the room needs and it will sit properly in the space. Circles are fine, and so are shapes with cut-outs.

We also make larger bespoke pieces to order for hotels and bigger homes.

Keeping a carpet with a story

Sometimes the carpet itself is the point. Made into a rug, it stays in use instead of rolled up in the loft. Here's what two customers told us.

"We bought a huge piece of beautiful 1960s carpet and wanted to make the most of it rather than cut it up or waste it. Wiltshire Rugs made several rugs from it, each finished beautifully to the sizes we needed. It was a brilliant way to preserve such a unique piece of carpet and give it a new lease of life."

"I had an old rug belonging to my mum that I really wanted to keep, but it was in need of some care. Wiltshire Rugs whipped the edges for me and brought it back into a condition where I could use it again. It means so much to me to be able to keep and use something that belonged to my mum. Thank you."

What makes a piece of carpet suitable

Size comes first. As long as the piece is big enough for what you want, we can make it.

The type of carpet is rarely the problem, because we finish all types. It doesn't have to be carpet you bought from us either: bring a piece from anywhere.

Condition matters more. Flooring specialists say most carpet can be bound, but its material and condition decide how well it turns out. A sound backing gives the best rugs. Badly worn carpet, a damaged backing or heavy water damage may not give a lasting result.

The cut edges are the easy part. A raw edge left unfinished can start to unravel, and the tape or whipping is there to stop that. If you're not sure about your piece, send us a photo and we'll tell you what we can do.

A rug with a border, or a whipped edge

Tape edging: the bordered rug

A cotton or herringbone tape is stitched all the way round, framing the rug like a border. If you've been looking for a rug with a border, this is it. We keep hundreds of tapes, with suede and leather if you want something different. A contrast colour makes the border a feature. A tape close to the carpet colour keeps it quiet.

Whipping

Yarn is wrapped tightly over the cut edge, matched to the carpet or in a contrast colour. The edge blends in, so the carpet stays the star. We whip in British wool for rugs and runners, and in hard-wearing outdoor yarn for doormats.

We'll send tape samples so you can hold them against your carpet at home before you choose. There's more on both finishes on our carpet binding, whipping and taping page. Enough carpet left for the stairs? We make stair runners from suitable carpet you already have too.

How it works, wherever you are in the UK

Get in touch with what you have and what you'd like it to become. We agree the size and the edge with you, then your carpet is cut and finished by hand in Melksham.

If you're near Melksham, you can drop your carpet at the workshop. If you're further away, call Eleanor and she'll talk you through getting your carpet to us and back.

There's no price list, because no two pieces are the same. Each one is quoted on its size and finish, plus any cutting to a new shape. See finished pieces on our gallery.
